Music 1 Course Description
This course provides students with the opportunity to study the concepts of music through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and aural within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres. All students studying the course nominate three electives made up of any combination of performance, composition and/or musicology which reflect the three topics studied in the HSC course. Every student across the state, however, must complete one performance piece from any of the three topics studied and this is known as their Core Performance piece.
Each of the students in this class studied three topics including:
- An Instrument and its Repertoire
- Music for Small Ensembles
- Music for Radio, Film, Television and Multimedia
Performance Information
Students can choose to perform the piece unaccompanied or with accompanists or backing tracks. This year, due to COVID requirements, each student did not perform their repertoire for HSC markers. Due to the state-wide lockdown, students recorded their works they wished to submit for their HSC in their own homes. These works were then marked and results submitted to NESA, as part of a COVID Special Considerations Program, initiated by NESA. The students worked extremely hard to adapt their repertoire to satisfy these requirements, using backing tracks where available and in some cases, purchased necessary equipment to enhance their recordings for submission.
The performance clips featured here are the students' submissions, recorded in their homes.
Composition Information
One student chose to compose a piece of Music as one of their electives. Students studied music written for small ensembles and gained inspiration from the manner in which the musical concepts interact with each other within the context of an ensemble work. The student utilised a music notation software called 'Musescore' and the recording of this composition was produced from this software.
